Optimizing Postpartum Well-Being

Although we like to focus on the rosy glow and the bliss of new motherhood, the postpartum period is also a time of tremendous transition, stress and challenge. New mothers need and deserve support in order to protect their physical, mental and emotional health.

The following are some suggestions for self-care for new mothers:

Develop realistic expectations.
Don't expect to be a perfect mother. Don't expect to be blissfully happy and in love with your baby at every moment. All moms experience times of fatigue, ambivalence, irritability, etc.! Hormonal fluctuations and sleep deprivation can create an emotional roller coaster.
Plan ahead for physical assistance.
Accept offers from friends and family to bring in meals or help with housework. Hire help if you can afford it.
Make basic physical needs a priority.
Focus on getting enough rest, eating healthy foods, and drinking plenty of water. Sleep when the baby sleeps. Gradually resume your exercize routine when physically readly. Limit visitors. Turn off the phone ringer. Put a note on the door. The needs of the new family must come first! Find time to pamper yourself and to connect with your partner. Avoid isolation.
Talk honestly with supportive friends and family. Join a new mothers group.
Seek professional help if needed.

If you are worried about how you are coping with new motherhood, don't let embarrassment keep you from asking for help. Talk openly with your health care providers so they can help you get the help you need. Many factors can contribute to difficulties in the postpartum period. These include: a predisposition to depression or anxiety, difficult birth experiences, having a baby with special needs, or the presence of other stressful life events. Psychotherapy, support groups and/or medication may be helpful.
